Preston was abandoned when his "family" moved out & only took their female boxer. They left behind Preston along with his three puppies. Preston is blind, or at least 95% blind, but he managed to stay together with his pups until help arrived. His estimated date of birth is January 1, xxxx. At his last vet visit on November 9, xxxx, he weighed 33 lbs. He needs to gain at least 15 lbs to be at a healthy weight. Before we brought Preston into Ruff Love Rescue, the neighbor who tried to help him said that they had been feeding him for weeks with no change in his body condition. When we took him in & he was neutered, he was found to be full of intestinal parasites - we hoped he'd start putting on some weight after he finished his deworming meds. That didn't happen. He only gained 1 lb in 10 days although we were feeding him enough for an 80 lb dog. We also noticed that he could drink 4 quarts of water easily if you didn't stop him, and he went for water before food. Odd! We took him back to Blue Flint Animal Hospital in Asheboro to have lab work done. We were relieved to learn that everything was normal except his thyroid. He was started on thyroid replacement pills, but he is STILL was not gaining weight! Preston was recently diagnosed with Diabetes Insipidus. Once he has been on the injections for a little while, we will try his medication in pill form. Preston is one of the sweetest dogs ever! We took him to an adoption fair & he was nuzzling kids, even toddlers, who were all petting him at once. He loved the attention.
